Diaper Bag 101...Educate me!

I'm in need of some education in regards to diaper bags.

My sister is 10 years younger than me. Therefore When I when we adopted her I was in 4th grade and I remember everything. I remember her stroller, the clothes she wore, her pajamas, and her big honking diaper bag. Ten years later, things have changed drastically!

I'm in a diaper bag tornado. I love the Skip Hop Duo Deluxe and would like to purchase it. However, I'm concerned it won't be big enough.

Here's what I'm thinking...

I will always keeps an extra outfit or two, extra diapers/wipes, extra blankets and extra shirt for me in the car.

1) When we go on outings we usually are not gone all day. We will run an errand or two and be out for a few hours. I think this diaper bag would be perfect for things like that. It can hold a bottle or two or nursing cover, extra onesie, diapers, wipes, cream, burp cloth, hand sanitizer, pacifiers?, and changing pad.

2) If we do go father to visit family (my parents are 22 minutes and J's are 90 minutes away) we can still bring that diaper bag but put extra in the car or I can use my Vera Bag.

3) If we're going on an over night trip she would definitely get her own larger bag and we could fill the diaper bag with all bottles if we had to. {I am planning to nurse but these are just scenarios}

4) The sitter will always have plenty of diapers, wipes, and an emergency bottle at her house along with a change of clothing so we don't have to constantly bring everything back and forth.

When I look online to find "what do you put in your diaper bag" some people have lists a mile long! Do I really need all of that stuff for an outing to Target or HobLob? If I always keep extra in the car do I need an entire outfit in the bag or can I get away with just a onesie until we make it back outside? I know once it snows I won't want to go back outside, but honestly, I'm sure we'll be homebodies this winter with a young baby!

Is there anything big I'm missing? Do you have the Skip Hop Duo Deluxe? How do you like it? Is it big enough?

Any information is greatly appreciated for this first time mama!

  1. I haven't seen that diaper bag, but I still think it would be big enough. I'm to the point (my son is 11 months) where I don't even take a diaper bag for trips like Target. I keep a travel diaper bag in my trunk. It's a changing mat that folds up and holds a couple diapers, wipes, and butt cream :) I have a blanket in my backseat and I stick a paci in my purse and go! I've actually been doing this since he started solids (5 months) when the risk of blow outs went down and we haven't needed back up outfits...but those can be kept in the car all the time, too. You don't have to carry around a huge bag in order to be prepared!

  2. I had that diaper bag and while it was a little small, I like that. It kept me from being able to carry too much unnecessary stuff. Remember you'll also have to juggle the baby, car seat, stroller and everything else. I bought a couple cute zipper pouches to help keep things together (extra pacifiers, hand sanitizer, etc) so I wouldn't have to dig around to find small things. When Harper was really young I could keep two extra outfits, 5-7 diapers, wipes, bottles, and still have room to toss in my wallet and a snack. We really liked this bag.

  3. I actually don't use a diaper bag, I have a medium size Fossil tote. It's big enough for what I need with TWO kids (2 1/2 & 4months): wallet, 2 diapers for each kid, extra outfit for baby, wipes, butt cream, hand sanitizer (I have a rubber hanging holder from b&bw), phone, a snack, & an extra receiving blanket. I do have a few zipper pouches for lip gloss, diapers & butt cream, etc to keep it organized. You really don't need much. I never need anything but my wallet & diapers anyway. An extra outfit is a must though. Even when your child gets older (I've had my 2 yr old throw up many times when we were out simply because he has a very weak gag reflex). Good luck!!!

  4. I have a 2 month old....all you need are diapers, wipes, pacis, a change (or 2) of clothes, burp cloths, and a receiving blanket or two (I use these to change her on). I will also take bottles if we're going to be gone for a while. I used to think I needed a million things in the diaper bag but as I start getting the hang of it, I realize we don't need much at all. If I'm just running in Walmart I don't even bring the diaper bag in with us!!!!

  5. Hudson is almost five months old and I have changed his diaper maybe 3 times in public. And we go out quite a bit. But we are not usually gone that long, so I've hardly had to use anything from my diaper bag. I've never had to change his clothes, he doesn't use a paci, and we haven't really needed a blanket. So, I don't carry very much! I do bring a burp cloth (it seems he always spits up while in his carseat), a couple of diapers, wipes, a couple of toys, pacifier wipes (that I use for his toys), a nursing cover, and then my regular purse stuff. I have the Skip Hop Versa and love it. I use it more than my larger Petunia Picklebottom bag. It's great because it easily fits in the basket of my stroller and it's not too huge to lug around. Plus, you can wear it crossbody, too.
